Mark C. Hewitt has collaborated over the years on a number of visual art and text installations. Images from these projects are collected here. 1 - 4. City Running (2006) Exhibition and nocturnal live art event curated by artist Greg Daville for Brighton Fringe Festival 2006. A range of artists working in different disciplines each contributed an initial piece for an exhibition at Phoenix Gallery in Brighton. Over the subsequent weekends of the festival different groups of artists would go out into the city for a few hours during the evening and return with a new piece of work that was presented live at the gallery that night.
9 - 16. Gridshell Symphonies (Blank, 2008) Originator and creative producer for a music commission and performance as part of architecture08 festival. Composer Peter Copley created a new work for string quartet and trombone quartet in response to the Downland Gridshell at the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum, in which it received a first performance as part of the festival. 17 - 24. Caught in the act - Reading reading (Blank Productions, 2008) As originator / creative producer / writer, worked in collaboration with photographer Anna Mitchell and exhibition company Standard 8 to create a town centre installation in Reading for the National Year of Reading. The project was insipired by the photographs of André Kertész.
25 - 40. Polska by the Sea (LLL Productions, 2009) Creative producer & interviewer/editor for a public art installation of banner-size portraits by photographer Lisa Barnard at Eastbourne train station. The images celebrated Eastbourne's Polish community whilst an accompanying collection of 24 postcards combined images of domestic ephemera with short texts taken from interviews. 45 - 52. Leysdown Rose-Tinted (2011) Writer-in-residence at Leysdown on Sea, Isle of Sheppey, as part of a wider public art project curated and managed by Francis Knight Public Art Consultancy. Work there included items of alternative signage and text for two resting points by sculptor Alun Heslop on the Isle of Harty cycle trail. The text carved into the resting points is a poem in three short sections entitled Harty Triptych.
53 - 54. Promenade (LLL Productions, 2012) Creative producer & writer for a public art installation at Eastbourne Station in collaboration with photographer Malcolm Glover. The text was derved from words overheard while walking along Eastbourne seafront to complement Glover's panoramic timescape.
55 - 56. Plumpton poster (2013 - 2017) Poster text by Mark C. Hewitt, printed by Tom Paine Prining Press that was displayed at Plumpton train station (London Victoria to Easbourne line) for approximately five years, apparently by public demand.
57 -58. The Lost Room (2013) Writer on a project working and workshopping with homeless people in Canterbury leading to an installation at the Beaney House of Art & Knowledge. Project commissioned and curated by Francis Knight Public Art Consultancy.
59 - 62. Future Dreaming (2014) Group installation / exhibition curated by artist Guyan Porter at The Foundry, Lewes. Contributed a vdeo installation linked to the text 'Expiry tbc.' and a one-off performance: 'it's time to consult the captain of the ship of dreams'.
63 -64. Congregation (2014-16) Wrote companion text in the form of a poem for an obliquely autobiographical video installation by photographer Malcolm Glover, depicing a row of worshippers in Ireland reciting the 'Our Father' alternating with a row of worshippers in England doing the same.
65 - 72. Body of Writing (LLL Productions, 2017) Public art installation in the cloisters of Salisbury Catheral featuring short texts created through writing workshops at HMP Erlestoke in Wiltshire (led buy Mark C. Hewitt & David Kendall) alongside images of prisoner tattos by photographer Willie Robb. Exhibition design was by Standard 8.
73 -74. Groynes 41-42 (2018) Collaborated on outdoor video installation project with photographer Malcolm Glover as part of Coastal Currents festival 2018. Basically short video portraits of a range of individuals enjoyng the seaside on a stretch of beach in St Leonards on Sea, in East Sussex.
75 - 76. Snow Q (2018) Directed performance elements for a multi-artform installation with text by Maria Jastrzębska, music by Peter Copley and digital and tactlile visual art features by Wendy Pye and Dagmara Rudkin. The text / performamce elements were thereafter developed and toured in 2020 as a live literature production.
