Plumpton poster
Lewes Live Literature / East Sussex Arts Partnership
January 2013 - July 2017

Text: Mark C. Hewitt
Typesetting / print: Peter Chasseaud (Tom Paine Printing Press)

This poster was on display in Plumpton Station, on the London Victoria to Eastbourne/Hastings line, from 2013 to the summer of 2017. The wording relates to a conversation with Mark Cornford, Clerk of the Course at Plumpton Racecourse, in which he recalled his pleasure at getting back to the village after visiting his son in London. I reimagined his sentiments as a sort of alternative public service announcement. The text was typeset and handprinted by Peter Chasseaud of Tom Paine Printing Press.

The poster was originally conceived as part of a 2012 project entitled Messages from a Sussex Village (devised for East Sussex Arts Partnership's 'Word County' programme). Station Master Michael Newman asked if this one could go back on display after the project finished as Plumpton commuters particularly liked it. (One or two had photos of it in their offices in London, he told me). Anyway, it went back up, remaining in place for over four years, during which time it also became the subject of a phone-in on BBC Radio Sussex.
